About Castello di Casole Interior Design
J. Banks Design was contracted to renovate the dilapidated castle into a 41 suite hotel on a 4,200-acre estate located in Tuscany, Italy

The existing structure consisted of nothing but ruins that had been part of the estate since the 10th century. We were hired to work with the development team, including the architect and builder, to transform the ruins into a beautifully restored luxury five-star boutique hotel that would serve as the centerpiece of the historic 4,200-acre estate.

Transforming ruins into a grand castle in true European tradition, with impeccably appointed suites and world-class amenities was our challenge.  Our designs needed to capture authentic Tuscan interior design in an elevated and current manner that would appeal to both American and European travelers alike.  It was imperative to fuse livable, residential elements into a perfectly functional hospitality operation.  Our design vision centered around melding the magical views of the Tuscan countryside with gloriously appointed interiors, paying homage to old Tuscany.

The private suites in a range of sizes were designed to accommodate the unique needs and tastes of all who visit. The interiors combine Old World Tuscan charm with modern boutique luxury, elegance and sophistication. We scoured all of Europe to source fabrics, fixtures and furnishings from acclaimed artisans. Throughout the restoration we made use of traditional construction methods and specified authentic materials found on the estate and throughout the region. Wood-beamed ceilings, exposed stone walls, original brick arches, reclaimed wood flooring, terracotta tile, marble, travertine, Italian glass mosaics, and hand-plastered finishes were used to create an alluring blend of old and new.  A soothing palette of sienna orange, blue and green compliment more vibrant Italian fabrics, handmade cabinets and furniture.

Antiques and accessories were purchased at local fairs and antique markets throughout Italy and we custom designed the hand painted wooden, or hand forged iron beds with Italian artisans.   We partnered with Bagni Volpi Noemi to custom design fine Italian linens for each of the suites and adorned the bathrooms with Carrera marble and Bisazza mosaic flooring.  The contemporary tiles, paired with contemporary Italian bath and light fixtures, added an unexpected, juxtaposing design element to surprise and delight. We custom designed all painted murals and interior millwork with rich details and design motifs.  Each door, cabinet and mantle was crafted by a specialty Italian artisan to add to the authentic Tuscan experience.
